LynxOS-178 is a safety partitioned real-time operating system based on open standards APIs, and has been deployed on many commercial and military avionics systems. LynxOS-178 is also the first and only commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) operating system to receive Reusable Software Component (RSC) acceptance from the FAA for DO-178B certification.

The company adds that new optimisations in the product will also offer better performance and memory utilisation for avionics developers to manage the Size, Weight, Power and Cost (SWaPC) for new designs.

LynxOS-178 2.2.3 is based on a new set of Power Architecture-optimised tools to give an easy migration for existing designs to new Power Architectures such as the QorIQ family from Freescale, and will offer off-the-shelf BSPs for COTs and development boards from Freescale, GE Intelligent Systems and Curtiss Wright Controls. LynxOS-178 2.2.3 also offers both a native POSIX API and FACE application programming interface for migration of software applications across different commercial and military avionics systems, helping to reduce the cost and risk associated with the re-use of software components.

LynxOS-178 is a commercial off-the-shelf COTS RTOS that fully satisfies the objectives of the DO-178B level A specification and meets requirements for Integrated Modular Avionics developers. LynxOS-178 delivers the security and real-time responsiveness needed for safety-critical systems and provides a low-risk path to DO-178B certification for developers to meet the technical requirements in the production of software for airborne systems. It provides full POSIX conformance, enabling developers to take advantage of the time-to-market and investment-protection benefits of open standards-based development.
