Hundreds of drones are missing after a technical malfunction saw them fall into the Yarra River – ABC news

Potentially hundreds of drones are resting on the bottom of the Yarra River after a mysterious technical malfunction on Friday night sent them plummeting into the water in Melbourne’s CBD.

The drones were to be part of a pre-game light show before the Matildas game against France at Docklands Stadium.

For reasons still to be determined, the drones broke off from their programmed routine and descended into the river at Docklands.

The Australian Traffic Network [ATN], which owns and operates the drones, said 500 of them took off but as many as 350 of those failed to return.

“This is the first technical situation we’ve had in the 18 months that we’ve been in the business,” Vic Lorusso from ATN said.

“We’ve done hundreds and hundreds of shows across the country and some parts of different countries and we haven’t seen what we saw on Friday so we’re obviously going through it step by step.”
