The new FMI release enables the simulation parameters to be modified even at runtime. It also features improved initialisation, event handling, and handling in real-time environments as well as in hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulators.

Ten software vendors collaborated in the definition of the interface. Thus, a stable exchange of dynamic systems among tools can be expected, said Martin Otter, chairman of the Modelica Association which managed the collaboration. FMI originally has been developed in the EU project Modelisar. This project has been terminated in 2011; in 2012, the Modelica Association has been launched to further develop the interface.

The three dSpace tools that support FMI2.0 are the PC-based simulation platform VEOS, the HiL simulator Scalexi and Synect, a data management software.
