The STEVAL-FKI001V1 has been designed for applications in areas like smart home or building scenarios, asset tracking, energy management, smart farming and industrial monitoring and control applications. It combines the BlueNRG-1 Bluetooth System-on-Chip with ST’s S2-LP Sub-Gigahertz transceiver. This dual radio architecture allows simultaneous operation on a variety of frequency bands and with different protocols, such as Bluetooth, proprietary 2.4 GHz or Sub-Gigahertz technology or Sigfox.

Users can use it to develop intelligent objects that connect to each other via mesh or point-to-point connections and support flexible options for connecting to the cloud. For example, a convenient sensor system for smart home applications could easily be combined with a local sensor network based on either BLE or Sub-Gigahertz technology to connect the entire system to the cloud for remote monitoring. The latter can be done either via a local gateway or directly with a Sigfox connection available anywhere.

The Bluetooth 5.0 certified BlueNRG-1 solution ensures convenient setup, configuration and modification of device settings during installation or maintenance and allows monitoring of networked node sensors via an app that runs on Android or iOS devices.

The S2-LP sub-Gigahertz transceiver is suitable for local networking and LPWAN installations such as the Sigfox technology, which is available worldwide, to enable real-time reporting of events, for example. In addition, users can use the readily available Sigfox-enabled networking functions to track or remotely locate devices or equipment. With its Arduino Uno V3 connectors, the kit can be expanded with ST’s range of X-Nucleo solutions.

The STEVAL-FKI001V1 is also interoperable with the recently announced BlueNRG Part Board. This provides an additional boost to the creativity of developers to easily implement seamless smart sensor solutions (e.g. sensor nodes, local gateways and global cloud connectivity).

The development kit is now available from ST distributors or directly from st.com at a price of $56.
