A €3.1m European project has brought together several key technology developers to produce a sustainable platform for energy harvesting.

The SELECT (Sustainable Electronics for Energy Harvesting Applications) project is developing a complete battery-free platform for IoT designs.

The project brings together low power microcontrollers from OniO with Epishine’s solar cells and biodegradable circuit boards from Jiva Materials in the UK as well as supercapacitors developed from renewable lignin by Ligna Energy.

The platform will be used by 4Mod Technology in France for battery-free remote controls and by Pricer in Sweden for electronic shelf labels (ESL) that enable automated, real-time price updates, boosting efficiency and accuracy for retailers.

ONiO looks to kill the IoT battery with RISC-V microcontroller

The platform uses the ONiO.zero microcontroller tailored for extreme low power and RF energy harvesting with the photovoltaics from Epishine for IoT and small electronics applications, kicking off with electronic shelf labels (ESLs) and remote controls.

The electronics industry, especially the IoT and small electronics segment, is grappling with huge sustainability issues. Traditional solutions rely on disposable or rechargeable batteries that are pricey, high-maintenance, and bad for the environment. SELECT aims to ditch these for energy-harvesting tech that draws power from ambient sources like light and radio frequencies.
By eliminating batteries, SELECT plans to slash the environmental footprint of electronic devices, from production to disposal. It’s not just about high-tech; it’s about a greener, more sustainable future for electronics.
