€8m commercial solid state battery project for electric vehicles
A €8m project across Europe is aiming to develop a new generation of solid state battery materials for electric vehicles with commercial cells that can be built on today’s manufacturing processes.
With 14 partners from eight countries, led by CEA in France, the All Solid-sTate Reliable BATtery (Astrabat) project aims to develop an all solid-state electrolyte design suited to the new high-energy electrode materials and compatible with current mass-production processes. Rhe funding comes from the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) of the European Commission rather than the research-based Horizon 2020 programme,
The four year project will develop the materials for a solid hybrid electrolyte and electrodes, and adapt the development of new all solid state battery cells on a conventional process adopted for manufacturing electrodes in Li-ion cells. The project will also design an all solid state battery architecture for the next generation of Li-ion batteries to roll out in 2030 and define an efficient cell architecture with eco-design, end of life and recycling.
“Solid-state batteries are characterized by the highest energy densities of 350 Wh/kg and 1200 Wh/l with great safety and robustness. At IKTS we develop ion-conducting ceramic powders and printing processes with which innovative 3D-structured cell concepts can be produced for this type of storage,” said Dr. Kristian Nikolowski, Group Manager at the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS).
The project focuses on both the scalability of the production of these new batteries and the development of novel materials and manufacturing processes, moving from basic research-oriented developments to the proof of industrial manufacturability.
“Astrabat offers the EU the opportunity to bring together strong players from all over Europe: the partners come from countries such as Belgium, Poland, France, and Spain. All have extensive experience in the field of battery and related technologies, including state-of-the-art electrochemistry and modelling,” said Nikolowski.
The partners in Astrabat include Umicore (Belgium), Nanomakers (France), DAIKIN Chemical Europe (Germany) Yunasko-Ukraine (Ukraine) ELAPHE pogonske tehnologije (Slovenia) and car maker PSA (France).
