Eaton has acquired UK thermal monitoring firm Exertherm for an undisclosed sum.

Buying Exerthem marks an expansion for Eaton into continuous thermal monitoring for critical electrical equipment in key markets such as data centres.

Exertherm, based near London, has pioneered continuous temperature monitoring (CTM) technology for more than a decade for Industry 4.0 and the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The monitoring systems are integrated into low-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear, busway, power distribution units (PDU), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and motor control centres and are deployed globally.

For example the low voltage transformer kit uses CTM to improve reliability by detecting potential faults 70% more often than periodic inspections. Sensor looms connect back to a datacard via a cable to collect and transmit the sensor temperature data via Modbus 485, and the card activates alarms when a fault is detected. The datacard is housed in an external enclosure, along with the LEDs to provide local alarm status.

Each sensor loom continuously monitors both the Voltage Input and Voltage Output connections and continuously monitors coil tap change connections

“Exertherm is a company known for innovative technology and trusted solutions for data centers and other applications,” said Mike Yelton, president, Americas Region, Electrical Sector. “We look forward to the opportunity to integrate thermal monitoring solutions more broadly into our Brightlayer software suites. This will enable our customers to optimize their operations and enhance business performance by realizing the possibilities embedded in their data.”
