Egypt’s semiconductor cluster stronger than reported
Scott Smyser, executive vice president of worldwide marketing and business development at Si-Ware Systems Ltd. (Cairo, Egypt) pointed out that we’d only mentioned a few of the companies present in Egypt in a recent article IP hot spot forms in Egypt.
The trend pointed out by the article was correct, Smyser said, but in an email he lists several recent startups that are based in Egypt and a couple of overseas companies with operations in Egypt.
They include:
Mipex Ltd. (Cairo, Egypt), a supplier of analog and mixed-signal IP for use in CMOS. The firm’s offerings include Serdes, clocking circuits and low-voltage differential signalling circuits. The company was founded in 2011.
Silgenix Ltd. (Cairo, Egypt), founded in 2011, provides voltage regulator IP for use in CMOS chips and the SilverGen Synthesis Software, a design tool for the automated synthesis of power circuits.
Scenario Consultants (Cairo,Egypt), established in 2004, is a team of experienced IC designers, that provide services in the areas of back-end and front-end design and verification, RF and analog, mixed-signal design, creation of design kits and CAD tool development.
Two companies not headquartered in Cairo but with offices there are:
MEMS Vision Ltd. (Monteal, Quebec), a 2009 startup that makes a range of humidity and temperature sensors but also provides a MEMS development platform called MoSIC. It lists its Canadian address first but is also present in Cairo.
Vidatronic Inc. (College Station, Texas), a 2010 startup that provides intellectual property and design services in the area of power management in the form of capacitor-less low-drop out regulators and switching converters for portable, handheld and wearable electronics.
And then there is the 2007 startup Silicon Vision LLC that was effectively acquired by Synopsys Inc. in July 2015. Synopsys acquired the low power communications IP, including Bluetooth Smart CMOS radio IP, created by the company and now Silicon Vision works exclusively with Synopsys. The expectation is that the arrangement will allow Synopsys/Silicon Vision to build out a larger team in Cairo.
These are on top of Si-Ware Systems and Boost Valley mentioned in the previous article.
