The first customer for the toolset is carmaker BMW. According to EB, the customer decided not to implement OEM-specific modules but instead deploy a "straight" Autosar implementation. This decision helps to speed the Autosar deployment – the company plans to bring an Autosar-equipped car to the roads already in 2015. This car will be a model of BMWs top-of-the-line 7 series.
According to Jochen Schoof, EB Vice president ECU Software and Tools, Autosar 4.0 offers a range of improvements against its predecessor version 3.2. The most visible and important improvements include better functional safety through support for memory partitioning in the ECUs and protection against unauthorized code modifications. Other significant improvements include multicore support, real-time enhancements, and support for partial networking. "Autosar 4.0 will facilitate software migration across various ECUs very significantly", Schoof said.
