Energy harvesting presence sensor communicates via Bluethooth LE
The new sensor, type designation EMDCB, uses a passive infrared sensor (PIR) for motion detection. Thanks to small solar modules, it obtains the required energy from ambient light so that neither batteries nor maintenance work are required. An energy accumulator ensures that the sensor functions even when there is not sufficient light for a while. The sensor is also equipped with an NFC interface so that it can be integrated and configured in lighting control systems via an NFC reader, smartphone or tablet.
The EMDCB’s wireless communication is encrypted using AES-128 authentication based on the device-specific, randomly generated security key. A 32-bit signature is generated and sent with the radio telegram. All transmitted radio telegrams are authenticated by AES-128 to ensure data integrity and authenticity.
With this presence sensor, EnOcean offers now a complete control solution for Bluetooth lighting systems, which makes a fast introduction of their products possible for the partners of the enterprise. In addition to the battery-free Easyfit switches for direct control of LED lights, the PIR sensor enables more complex control logic by providing room occupancy and illuminance data via Bluetooth. These data form the basis for intelligent services such as demand-oriented lighting control or room occupancy management and make LED lighting systems an integral part of networked, intelligent building technology.
EnOcean plans to further expand its Easyfit portfolio of batteryless Bluetooth sensors in the future to provide additional building data such as temperature and humidity for further intelligent control functions. EnOcean will also be presenting corresponding prototypes at CES. The new sensor will be available from January 2019.
