Energy saving OLED lighting system helps hospital patients sleep
OLEDWorks is collaborating with Highland Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center, which has formed a team of doctors and nurses to provide feedback on the innovative white and amber OLED lighting system. OLEDWorks is using research and development funding of $100,645 from NYSERDA to develop the white and amber OLED prototype and then quantify the benefits of the lighting with Highland Hospital.
According to John B. Rhodes, President and CEO, NYSERDA, “As a catalyst in the clean energy marketplace, NYSERDA helps innovators like OLEDWorks build businesses that deliver needed products and services, and build a vibrant cleantech community in the State.”
Amber OLEDs are free of blue wavelengths found in regular LEDs that are known to disrupt sleep patterns. The new lighting technology is beneficial to hospitals because the amber lighting will not wake patients, allowing for better sleep. The new lighting technology supports New York State’s energy efficiency goal of reducing energy consumption in buildings by 23%.
OLEDWorks has received five grants to help improve performance and reduce the high costs of OLED lighting manufacturing, which will provide affordable, high-quality products to help grow the emerging OLED market. In total, OLEDWorks received $1.68 million from NYSERDA and $3 million from the US Department of Energy over the past three years.
