US edge AI startup Eta Compute has raised $12.5m in a series C round of funding led by Synaptics, and signed a co-development agreement.

The round brings the total funds raised to $31.5m and adds Satish Ganesan, Chief Strategy Officer at Synaptics, to the board of directors.

The co-development and co-marketing partnership gives Eta Compute access to the Synaptics low power Katana multicore edge AI chip and Synaptics access to Eta Compute’s TENSAI Flow software and neural network compilers, models and AI applications.

The joint partnership is also aiming to provide complete audio- and vision-based edge AI systems for smart home consumer IoT markets, and for smart industrial IoT (IIoT) applications in buildings, factories, and cities.

“Synaptics continues to aggressively expand into high growth markets and applications in the IoT space,” said Satish Ganesan, Chief Strategy Officer at Synaptics. “Eta Compute is a recognized leader in energy-efficient edge inferencing. The combination of Synaptics’ low power Katana Edge AI SoC coupled with Eta Compute’s power optimized machine learning compiler and software enables us to deliver the industry’s most power-efficient AI solutions at the edge.”

The Tensai endpoint AI platform consists of the ECM3532 neural sensor processor, flow software and neural network compiler. Eta Compute will continue to develop the software platform but is aiming to expand into complete systems.

“We’re seeing growing customer interest in our ECM3532 processor and AI sensor boards for energy-constrained IoT applications requiring multi-year battery life and energy harvesting. Partnering with Synaptics enables us to extend our industry-leading energy efficiency to consumer and other applications demanding higher performance sound, image and sensor processing,” said Dr Ted Tewksbury, CEO of Eta Compute. “Our new funding and partnership provide the resources to expand our total available market, grow design wins and accelerate the introduction of modules and systems to satisfy our customers’ desire for complete, ready-to-deploy solutions.”

Eta Compute’s patented Continuous Voltage and Frequency (CVFS) technology is aimed at low power embedded AI platforms.
