ETAS partners with Mimer to address challenges of software-defined vehicle
ETAS GmbH, provider of basic vehicle software, middleware and development tools for the realization of software-defined vehicles, is joining forces with the Swedish embedded database software vendor Mimer Information Technology AB to develop an enterprise data management system for vehicle computers based on Autosar-Adaptive.
Vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers are facing an increasing data management challenge as they implement software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The need to store and use data in the vehicle itself in an automotive-standard compliant manner remains unchanged. But software-defined vehicles bring challenges, both in terms of the volume of data to be managed and in terms of the need to ensure that data “snapshots” are consistent. An important role is played here by the requirements of UN ECE WP.29, according to which vehicle manufacturers must be able to quickly provide vehicle-specific solutions to cyber attacks at any time. To this end, manufacturers must keep the exact software details of each vehicle, including version history.
In this context, manufacturers must also make the data available in a consistent, identifiable, and extensible manner, both for planning on product enhancements and innovations and for providing an enterprise-wide software ecosystem that can be leveraged by new entrants in the mobility value chain.
ETAS and Mimer have addressed these challenges by integrating ETAS RTA-VRTE, an Autosar platform software framework for vehicle computers, with Mimer’s SQL Automotive solution for consistent, reliable and secure data transactions. And it does so whether accessed locally in the vehicle or remotely from back-end systems in the enterprise.
Such a combination enables autosar-adaptive applications to interact with data stores to store and retrieve data. In addition, it is possible for non-Autosar software to access the same data using normal SQL queries.
Bosch subsidiary ETAS has developed an RTA-VRTE Starter Kit on the market that is compatible with Mimer and allows customers to test both ETAS’ Autosar adaptive and Mimer’s SQL solution. The Starter Kit is available for both BlackBerry|QNX platforms and Linux Host OS platforms.

“An embedded database with transactional support for data consistency is a complementary solution to the Autosar Adaptive platform that bridges automotive and enterprise data management,” said Dr. Nigel Tracey, vice president for Vehicle Operating Systems at ETAS.
