The funding is intended to bolster the ICS as a world-class center for compound semiconductor research. It builds on long-running work between the university, IQE plc, the Welsh and UK governments that includes awards of £17.3 million from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund and £12 million from Welsh government.

The latest money will be used to help build, equip and run a cleanroom at the Institute. The plans it for the ICS to take graduates from Cardiff and elsewhere and turn laboratory research into products and services by working with commercial partners (see Welsh chip foundry planned).
