Europe launches three pilot lines for photonics
The three manufacturing Pilot Lines are PIX4LIFE, MIRPHAB and PI-SCALE, which are aimed at health applications, mid-infrared imaging sensors for the detection of chemicals in gas and liquids and flexible OLED production respectively.
The PIX4LIFE pilot line, coordinated by the IMEC (Leuven, Belgium) research institute, will build on promising silicon nitride circuits to make compact, low-cost detection and imaging systems in the visible spectrum. Sensors based on this technology could include cytometers, DNA sequencers, gas sensors, microscopes and medical imagers.
PI-SCALE, coordinated by the Holst Centre, the Netherlands, is expected to accelearate the development of flexible OLEDs for lighting applications.
MIRPHAB, coordinated by CEA-Leti (Grenoble, France) is a pilot line with a miniaturized laser technology that can be used for compact, low cost and low power consumption sensing devices which can be used for safety, security and environmental applications.
The Photonics PPP was established by the European Commission in December 2013 with the task of reinforcing European leadership in photonics by providing access to manufacturing to thousands of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
