Europe splutters as global chip market pushes on
That’s according to data from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, reported by the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA).
The latest figures included a marginal upward revision of the September 2014 data for all territories except Europe, whose September figure was revised down.
For October 2014 growth of the global chip market year-on-year was 9.6 percent, up from 8.9 percent in September, which was revised upwards from 8.0 percent. However at the same time the European region saw its annual growth decline from a revised 7.6 percent in September to 5.2 percent in October.
The three-month average of global chip sales for October was $29.685 billion, up by 9.6 percent on the equivalent figure in October 2013.
The year-to-date figure for global chip sales was revised back above 10 percent for September 2013, thanks to the amended figures and for the first ten months of the year increased to 10.2 percent.

The Americas region sales enjoyed averaged sales of $6.410 billion up 12.2 percent from October 2013. The Asia-Pacific saw averaged sales go above $17 billion and increase by 12.1 percent. China, which is nearly half the Asia-Pacific figure and included within it had averaged chip sales in October 2014 of $8.118 billion but is growing less strongly than the rest of the Asia-Pacific region. The Japanese chip market continues to contract although the pace of that contraction decreased in October.
Monthly data is given by the ESIA as a three-month average, although the WSTS organization tracks actual monthly data. The ESIA and other regional semiconductor industry bodies opt to use averaged data because it evens out the actual data that typically show troughs at the beginnings of quarters and peaks at the ends of quarters.
When comparing market growth in euros and in US dollars exchange rate effects were more noticeable in October than in September Measured in euro, three-month averaged semiconductor sales were 2.475 billion euros in October 2014, up 2.1 percent versus the previous month and an increase of 9.0 percent versus the same month a year ago.
