European battery cell production: Pilot project in France
EU Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic launched a battery alliance in 2017. The aim is to set up battery factories in time for the expected boom in electric cars in Europe. A consortium of companies led by France includes the Peugeot manufacturer PSA, its German subsidiary Opel and the Total subsidiary Saft.
A factory with around 2000 employees is to be built in France in 2022, said Le Maire. A second factory is planned in Germany. According to additional information, this will be built from 2024.
He praised the plan as an example of concrete Franco-German cooperation. Federal Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) announced that the second consortium of companies led by Germany would be launched by the end of the year. “We are very confident that this example shows that market-oriented industrial policy will continue to work together with companies in today’s world”.
Altmaier had already announced in May that the development of European battery technology would also create jobs in Germany.
