
European Lighting industry bundles forces in new governing body
LightingEurope replaces two existing organizations, the European Lamp Companies Federation (ELC) and the Federation of National Manufacturers Organization for Luminaires and Electrotechnical Components for Luminaires in the European Union (CELMA). According to a press release at the opportunity of the merger, LightingEurope regards itself as a platform to unify the strengths of the industry to meet the challenges and opportunities created by the current "unprecedented change in lighting technology" caused by the ascent of LED lighting.
The association also intends to act as a platform for development and communication of industry positions while shaping the future of lighting in Europe and worldwide. It also is designed as a platform for shape political agendas and promote European legislation – hence the seat of the organization is Brussels.
As to their goals, the association said it is committed to innovation, sustainability, quality and leadership in lighting. Strategic focus areas Smart Lighting including energy savings through correct design, installation, operation and maintenance of lighting systems. In addition, the organization plans to develop the opportunities arising from Solid State Lighting.
The group also plans to contribute to establish industry standards and guidelines. Founding members include companies as well as industry organizations. The member’s list reads like a Who’s Who of European and international lighting organizations – it ranges from Spanish ANFALUM to German ZVEI. Members are, among many others, GE Lighting, Osram, Panasonic Lighting, Philips, Toshiba Europe and Zumtobel.
