MRAM component supplier Everspin Technologies Inc. (Chandler, Arizona) has said it is planning to expand its domestic MRAM manufacturing in the state of Indiana.

According to reports this is set to be at the WestGate One microelectronics campus in Odon, Indiana. This would increase Everspin’s capacity to manufacture toggle MRAM and STT-MRAM.

Everspin said it would also work with the local research community to create a Technology Development Center for MRAM at the site.

Funding

Everspin said it is working with state and federal government to secure funding to build a trusted manufacturing line in the state of Indiana. Everspin’s MRAM manufacturing site in Chandler, Arizona will continue operations and be the basis for technology transfer to the Indiana fab location. Everspin could be seeking funds under the recently passed US Chips Act, but did not comment on this.

“Everspin is the sole domestic commercial manufacturer of MRAM devices today. Expanding the capacity of MRAM manufacturing domestically is of strategic benefit for Everspin and its commercial and US government partners. When funding is fully secured, Everspin will kick off the activities to move this exciting project forward,” says Sanjeev Aggarwal, CEO of Everspin, in a statement.

What remains unclear is the size of Everspin’s commitment. The company plans to build a 10,000 square foot wafer fab and development building for discrete and embedded MRAM, according to local radio reports. The WBIW radio report said that Everspin planned to start construction in 2023 and would create 35 jobs by the end of 2027.
