
Eye-safe LiDAR on a chip announced
SiLC, founded in June 2018, claims its device will transform the economics of the lidar market for a range of consumer, industrial, robotics and security applications. The company plans to demonstrate a 4D Vision Sensor test chip at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
Existing solutions based on time-of-flight at 905nm wavelength, suffer range limitations due to eye-safety considerations as well as concerns about multi-user crosstalk. SiLC claims that its system allows use of coherent detection.
“The gating factor limiting the broader use of this technique has been the expensive telecom-grade components, such as narrow linewidth lasers and coherent receivers,” explained Mehdi Asghari, CEO of SiLC, in a statement. “This is where we come in. We’re able to integrate all the required functionalities into a single silicon chip, utilizing our mature silicon photonic platform, to offer a compact and cost-effective solution.”
SiLC was founded by Mehdi Asghari and others with a track records working at such companies as Bookham and Kotura.
