
Farnell element14 looks to expand into boards

It already collaborates with semiconductor vendors to manufacture development boards such as Freescale’s recent Freedom board for its Kinetis L family of chips, the NXP LPC4357 dual core ARM chip board and peripherals for the Raspberry Pi low cost computer. The company is evaluating a move into its own boards, said Laurence Bain, CEO of Farnell. “There are clearly opportunities coming up,” he said.
Embest already supplies an open source development environment and an operating system call Coocox.
The company is also investigating supplying board level products said David Shen, chief technology officer at Farnell. However it is vital not to compete with existing customers, said Bain.
