The new Raspberry Pi model comes complete with a faster quad-core Broadcom BCM2837 64-bit application processor operating at 1.4 GHz and a new Cypress communications chip that can offer certified dual-mode 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.2. Faster communications have also been provided through Gigabit Ethernet over USB 2.0, which allows transfer speeds of up to 300 Mbps. Thermal management problems from the original Modal B board have also been minimised and Power over Ethernet (PoE) is now a possibility through the upgraded RJ45 port and a new PoE Hat that will be released this summer.

Farnell element14 will offer the board as a standalone product and as part of an element14 Starter Pack, which includes a 16GB Micro-SD Card with NOOBS pre-installed, the official Raspberry Pi 2.5A Power Supply, and the official Raspberry Pi Case.

To support the board, the company has also published new content on the element14 community site.

Highlights from the new content include:

Full-build instructions for a Mobile GPS Treasure Hunt game created by element14 community member Les Pounder. The game also uses the official 7” touchscreen display and a Microstack GPS module in addition to the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. It allows users to mark a treasure location on the onscreen map and challenge others to hunt it down using the project’s GPS features.

A Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Benchtest puts the board through its paces, looking at actual CPU and memory usage, communications speed and operating temperatures.

The remainder of the new content includes an unboxing video, GPIO pin-out diagram, FAQs and technical specifications, as well as an introduction to the new official Raspberry Pi Power over Ethernet (PoE) HAT.
