For developers of self-driving cars, several new chips from Maxim Integrated Products offer significantly more options than existing products: Compared to the closest competitor’s solution, the MAX40026 high-speed comparator and MAX40660/MAX40661 transimpedance amplifiers with their high bandwidth enable 15 km/h faster autonomous travel at highway speeds by providing more than twice the bandwidth and 32 additional channels (128 instead of 96) in a lidar module while maintaining the same module size.

With more than twice the bandwidth and the ability to deliver 33 percent more channels in the same lidar module size, the transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) enable optical receiver designers to achieve higher resolution lidar images that in turn enable faster autonomous driving systems. With a footprint of 5 mm², the chips enable a system size that is smaller than the closest competing solution. This allows developers to incorporate many more channels into vehicle platforms with limited installation space. The ICs meet the stringent safety requirements of the automotive industry with AEC-Q100 qualification, improved ESD performance and failure modes, effects and diagnostic analysis (FMEDA) to support system-level ISO 26262 certification.

The new TIAs feature 128 channels with the industry’s highest bandwidth of 490 MHz for the MAX40660 and 2.1 pA/√Hz input-related noise density to support more accurate distance measurement in lidar applications; in addition, the MAX40026’s low propagation delay of only 10 ps contributes to accurate detection of both stationary and moving objects.
