FCC opens era of wireless charging ‘at-distance’
As the first FCC certification for power-at-a-distance wireless charging under Part 18 of the FCC’s rules, this development represents a new era of wireless charging, and opens up a tremendous opportunity for the electronics industry, according to Dialog Semiconductor plc, an investor in and partnet of Energous.
Dialog is the exclusive component supplier of WattUp transmitter and receiver ICs, and has invested $25 million into Energous over the past year.
The WattUp mid-field transmitter can deliver power via radio frequency (RF) energy to WattUp-enabled electronic devices at a distance of up to three feet. The technology can do both contact-based and non-contact-based wireless charging, as well as charging multiple devices at once.
The company did not comment on the efficiency of energy transfer or how it falls off with distance.
“Untethered, wire-free charging – such as charging a fitness band even while wearing it – is exactly what consumers have been waiting for,” said Stephen Rizzone, CEO of Energous, in a statement, issued by Dialog Semiconductor.
“Providing meaningful power-at-a-distance is a real game changer for wireless charging,” said Mark Tyndall, senior vice president of corporate development and strategy at Dialog Semiconductor, in the same statement.
