Fibre optics PHY integrates transceiver, optoelectronics and optics
The integrated FOT is an optical port for 100 Mb/s in a single component. “By combining the ASIC IC, photodiode and LED in a single component, we are significantly reducing the cost and space required for Ethernet connectivity at 100 Mb/s in the car,” said Carlos Pardo, CEO and co-founder of KDPOF. “The reduced number of components also reduces testing and qualification efforts”. The KD7051 therefore reduces the overall cost compared to shielded twisted pair (STP) copper cable, the supply chain is simplified. The KD7051 PHY thus offers competitive prices for connections that are EMC critical or require galvanic isolation. Applications include battery management systems, camera and sensor connections, fast Ethernet connections and smart antenna links.
Offering a completely new FOT design, the KD7051 transceiver IC uses low-cost MEM encapsulation and allows SMD reflow mounting with 8 x 7 mm LGA components. The FOT is shielded against electromagnetic radiation. The optical fibre connection is made via a very simple plastic connector, which is attached to the top side. The temperature range from -40°C to +105°C meets the harsh environmental requirements of the automotive industry. With a vibration class of V2 it resists the conditions in the engine compartment. In addition, the component is waterproof even without sealing. Even without the housing of the ECU shielding, the excellent EMC performance is maintained because the shielding is integrated into the PCB component. The installation of FOT and IC in the PCB is simplified. The optics implement Tx and Rx lenses.
As a large diameter polymer optical fibre, POF is more cost-effective to manufacture and install: installation is simple plug and play; winding and clamping is similar to copper cable. In addition, the optical harness can be installed during vehicle assembly in the same process as the copper harness. POF has been present in vehicles for more than 10 years and is installed in millions of cars.
