UK RF chip maker Filtronic has opened a new design centre in the Cambridge Science park.

The centre will allow recruitment from the area as well as access to the network of key local industry players and research institutions

“Opening an office at Cambridge Science Park is a pivotal step in our growth strategy,” said Nat Edington, CEO at Filtronic. “Cambridge’s thriving ecosystem of technology and innovation is an ideal environment for Filtronic as we continue to develop resilient, high-performance solutions for demanding environments. This expansion underscores our commitment to investing in the future of UK engineering and supporting the country’s ambitions in Space and Defence.”

The Cambridge office will also enhance Filtronic’s ability to support new and existing clients in the region, while providing a base for collaborative projects for RF and mmWave technology in mission-critical applications. It opened a design centre in Manchester in 2022.

The company is also doubling its manufacturing capacity with a move to a new site in County Durham, UK. The new custom-built facility will also enhance its cleanroom areas, engineering laboratories and test facilities, as well as host the headquarters Filtronic will relocate to its new site in early 2025.

Other recent investments by Filtronic include the introduction of cutting-edge plastic encapsulation technology, enhancing their hybrid manufacturing capabilities for fully moulded plastic packaging of RF components. It has also expanded its production lines and been actively recruiting engineering and operational roles to fulfil its expanding order book and pipeline.

Filtronic sees $9m mmWave follow on order from SpaceX

This follows a strategic partnership and commercial agreement with SpaceX, which includes the ongoing supply of E-band solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs), alongside collaborative efforts in developing and delivering comparable products across multiple frequency bands core to SpaceX’s Starlink platform.

“The new facility’s increased production space and enhanced testing facilities will enable Filtronic to continue developing the next generation of innovative products — something that led to the business being awarded a King’s Award for Innovation earlier this year,” said Edington.
