Filtronic in the UK has seen a follow on production order worth $9m of its E-band Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) modules as part of its strategic partnership with SpaceX.

The Filtronic E-band SSPA technology is crucial for the deployment of SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, proving high-speed, low-latency internet to users around the globe. The order is expected to be fulfilled within the current financial year.

The SSPA devices boost a low-power Radio Frequency (RF) signal to a higher power level — crucial for higher frequency mmWave bands, where voltage levels are very low. The company manufactures mmWave devices in Sedgefield, UK, and can assemble in Maryland. US.

The order is part of a strategic partnership between Filtronic and SpaceX signed last year. SpaceX, headquartered in Hawthrone, California, has 6,281 satellites in low earth orbit for its Starlink Internet service, with 100 that support direct connection to mobile phones.

“We are delighted to receive this further order from our partner, SpaceX, as we continue to support the rollout of the Starlink constellation,” said Nat Edington, Chief Executive Officer at Filtronic, previously the CEO at battery management system chip designer Dukosi in Edinburgh. “The order demonstrates the continued significant role we are playing in helping SpaceX achieve their mission, and will continue to do so over the next five years.”
