First containerised software for Matter connected devices
MicroEJ has launched the first software platform to build connected things (IoT) for the Smart Home and industrial settings using the Matter protocol.
The launch at CES 2022 in Las Vegas this week is basd on MicroEJ’s patented Virtual Container technology (VEE), similar to Android, but designed for low-cost and low-power chips used in IoT edge wireless devices from small Cloud-connected sensors and smartwatches to satellites or datacentres.
The VEE’s standard virtual containers cut in half the design and time-to-market of industrial and consumer electronics devices, and supports all the major ARM chip providers, citing MediaTek, NXP, Qualcomm, Sony and ST Microelectronics.
“There are now more than 100 billion electronic objects produced per year worldwide, or nearly 10 devices per person and per year”, says Fred Rivard, CEO of MicroEJ. “To help with this IoT deluge, manufacturers around the world have chosen MicroEJ’s virtual technology as the alternative to Android Things for their electronic objects, whether they are connected or not.”
Customers and partners Include Amazon, one of the key promoters of Matter, Airbus, Audi, Iridium, Google, Leroy Merlin, SEB Group, Universal Electronics and Zebra.
“Matter is a disruptive foundational technology for connected things that will seamlessly work across global manufacturers and industries including Amazon, Apple, Google and Samsung eco-systems,” said Jeb Su, principal analyst at Atherton Research in Silicon Valley. “What MicroEJ brings is the ability for hardware makers to update most of their current IoT devices to Matter and build new ones without changing their current design process.”
VEE enables manufacturers to maintain their market presence by diversifying their electronic component suppliers. The additional costs associated with managing multiple suppliers are more than offset by reduced risk exposure, predictable revenue streams and productivity gains. It enables products to use less expensive electronics with lower power consumption. For example, it is possible to gain up to several weeks of additional battery-life on a connected watch.
In the consumer electronics market, for example, the MicroEJ VEE application container enables products to be designed up to three times faster, says the company, significantly accelerating time-to-market. MicroEJ VEE also simplifies dynamic upgrades of new features on products already deployed to meet new user needs including the Matter protocol.
MicroEJ supports several programming languages such as C, Java language, JavaScript, and soon Kotlin.
