First MLCC range with low-resistance soft termination

TDK has launched the first series of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) to use a low resistance soft termination design.

The CN series have only part of the terminal electrode covered by a resin layer to reduce the resistance to standard levels. These use a conductive resin between the two layers of plating with the base electrodes Cu and Ni-Sn, allowing the current to avoid the resin.

The MLCCs have a 10 ㎌ capacitance in the 3216 format  that measures 3.2 x 1.6 x 1.6 ㎜ and 22 ㎌ capacitance in the 3225 size that measures 3.2 x 2.5 x 2.5 ㎜). The low-resistance soft termination has a terminal resistance equivalent to standard products.

MLCCs with soft termination are used to prevent short-circuits in power lines and smooth the power voltages. However, since soft termination has a slightly higher terminal electrode resistance, it is necessary to keep the resistance low to reduce losses. The soft termination MLCCs are resistant to board flexure stress.

TDK predicts these products will encourage replacing MLCCs in power lines with soft termination to improve reliability. These new products have a higher capacitance than conventional products, help reduce parts and downsize equipment.

The CNA parts are compliant with AEC-Q200 for automotive use with the CNC for industrial designs, and mass production starts this month
