Flexenable’s conformable plastic LCDs enter concept cars
FlexEnable provided a 12.1” glass-free, conformable organic liquid crystal display (OLCD) that has been incorporated into a car’s A-pillar to allow for greater visibility and safety. The demonstrator was included in YFAI’s XiM17 autonomous concept interior that made its world debut at the 2017 North American Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.
With a radius of curvature that can go below 3cm, FlexEnable’s ultra-thin and lightweight OLCDs can be applied to curved surfaces in cars where glass-based displays won’t work. The ability of the display to run vivid colour and smooth video content is enabled by high-performance organic transistors on plastic substrates.
By combining the proven LCD technology with a high-performance organic backplane, FlexEnable boasts it can achieve the brightness and reliability required in demanding automotive applications. The technology is compatible with existing LCD production lines, and is scalable to large area displays.

The Experience in Motion demonstrator 2017 (XiM17) showcased by Yanfeng Automotive Interiors is designed to enable the use of several modes: lounge; meeting; family; and driving, enabling the autonomous vehicle to be used in various ways, by multiple people. It features a system that allows for interior flexibility to support multiple seat and floor console positions in the vehicle allowing for different ways of engaging.
