Flexible battery cooling system for electric vehicles
One of the most important challenges in the development of electric drives is the thermal management of batteries. It is crucial for the range of the vehicle and the service life of the batteries, and it is an essential factor for fast charging. In development, the current trend is towards liquid cooling. The main challenge here is to establish an optimum thermal connection between the battery cells and the heat sink. With the FLEXcooler, the Austrian technology group Miba has now developed a cooling system whose flexible shape adapts to the battery cells.
The Miba FLEXcooler is the first liquid cooling system on the market that not only optimally absorbs and dissipates heat due to the close connection between battery cells and cooling. The new system also requires no gap fillers, i.e. materials to fill the space between the battery cells and the cooling system. In addition, the Miba FLEXcooler is also very light. It can be used for prismatic, cylindrical and pouch battery cells.
Together with a European car manufacturer and other partners, Miba is currently working on the EU research project “i-HeCoBatt” (Intelligent Heating and Cooling Solution for Enhanced Range EV Battery Packs) to equip the FLEXcooler with sensors and thus make it intelligent. The sensors provide the vehicle’s control system with important information about the temperature distribution in the battery, enabling it to control and optimize its functions during operation. This increases the performance and service life of the battery.
