Fluke re-designs its multi-product calibrator for higher performance
Fluke Calibration in the Netherlands has re-designed its line of calibrators to boost the current and ensure the accuracy of all kinds of digital multimeters (DMMs).
The 5560A calibrator for 6.5 digit DMMs DMMs has been re-designed with lateral airflow and modular cards to accommodate 30A rather than 20A. It has also been specified for stability over two years to reduce re-calibration costs.
“In recent years, we have experienced increasing demand from laboratories for greater accuracy in their calibrators while also wanting multi-product solutions that free up bench space and keep costs down,” said Wim Sibon, Fluke Calibration Technical Sales Manager for Electrical Calibration in Europe.
There are also variants for calibrating 5.5-digit and 4.5-digit DMMs with the 5550A and 5540A respectively. The 5730A remains at the high end for 8.5-digit resolution testers.
“The requests from the market for 30A out of the calibrator and the inductance functionality brought us to this design,” he told eeNews Europe. “The [original] design of the 5500 is more than 20 years old so we had component issues and that brought us to a new ground up design. We moved all the components from the main board to plug-in boards for better serviceability without any impact on the performance.”
Cooling
“The higher current also means the cooling has changed drastically,” he said. “The previous versions had a fan on the back. Now the airflow is from the side and that cools the boards better so there is better temperature control.”
The previous designs guaranteed 99% specification for one year. For the 5560A this is now specified to 95% as well as 99% for two years, one year and 90 days.“What a lot of people were asking for was the 95% accuracy for one year and we had that already on the 5730 and now we have it on the multi-product calibrator,” he said.
Fluke, part of the Fortive group spun out of Danaher, says the 5560A is a new class of multi-product calibrator by catering for new and inexperienced workers joining the calibration business without much training. Key features include a large 7-inch display with intuitive touchscreen for ease of use, Visual Connection Management terminals and an optional accessory for efficient digital multimeter (DMM) calibration with minimal or no lead changes. The rugged and portable calibrator can also be automated using MET/CAL Calibration Management Software.
