Formulec brings e-car racing to new level
The technical data of the EF 1 prototype vehicle are at a level comparable to Formula Three: maximum speed is 250 km/h, it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in three seconds. The company said that during the first two years, 20 identical vehicles will compete against each other. From 2014 onwards, the race will be open for other vendor’s vehicles. The company also intends to organize a world championship for industrialists and carmakers that have developed electric single-seaters.
The Formulec vehicle is the result of an impressive multinational cooperation: The batteries are from SAFT who contributes its extensive experience in aerospace and automotive battery development. Depending on the profile of the racing track, the batteries provide enough energy for a race of 20 to 25 minutes. The two motors with 300 hp each are from Siemens, the transmission has been designed and by racing transmission specialist Hewland. Michelin has developed special energy-saving tires, and the chassis has been designed by the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One team. Safety engineering services provider Dekra contributed its expertise in safety structures and crash elements. Overall engineering management was provided by Segula Matra Technologies.
Formulec said it intends to create a sporting development platform for carmakers and energy industrialists who seek to increase the performance of electric vehicles.
