Foxconn buys Macronix wafer fab for $90 million
The wafer fab is on the Hsinchu Science Park and the transaction is expected to close before the end of 2021.
Foxconn has been trying to develop a semiconductor manufacturing contract business to complement its electronic manufacturing services business for several quarters. Macronix said the deal signifies a deeper commercial collaboration between Macronix and Foxconn.
Foxconn said it will use the plant to manufacture silicon-carbide power MOSFETs and MEMS to help it meet it strategic goals in serving the electric vehicle and digital health markets.
“The acquisition of the 6-inch wafer fab in Hsinchu Science Park officially signals Foxconn’s entry into the manufacture and development of wide band gap semiconductors, especially silicon-carbide, paving the way for a long-term commitment to semiconductor development,” said Young Liu, chairman and CEO of Foxconn.
The 6-inch wafer fab will function as headquarters for Foxconn’s semiconductor business group.
Macronix said it will focus on manufacturing 3D NAND and NOR flash products on 300mm-diameter wafers.
“Considering that Macronix is advancing to take the lead in the global automotive electronics market, a closer collaboration between Macronix and Foxconn in the near future may be anticipated,” said Miin Wu, chairman and CEO of Macronix.
