MicroLED technology developer Poro Technologies Ltd. (Cambridge, England) is working with Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) on developing microLED displays for augmented reality (AR) and other applications.

Poro Technologies – which trades a Porotech – will supply its technologies, including PoroGaN microLED-on-silicon and dynamic pixel tuning (DPT) and Foxconn will provide packaging, IC drivers, CMOS backplanes and module and system assembly. The result will microLED microdisplays for AR applications, for wearables and for smart devices.

The companies did disclose how quickly they expect the partnership to produce displays.

Market analyst Yole Group has stated that the adoption of microLED displays should arrive within the next few years. Yole said the microLED panel market is only going to be worth US$35 million in 2023 but will rise to US$150 million in 2024 (see MicroLED displays delayed but coming in two to three years).

“Our collaboration with Foxconn signifies a momentous step forward for microLED microdisplays and AR,” said Tongtong Zhu, founder and CEO of Porotech, in a statement.

Porotech is the developer of the PoroGaN platform which allows the production of chips that are capable of emitting the full visible spectrum of colours using a single GaN material system. DPT further enhances display capabilities, enabling MicroLED pixels to emit any visible colour at specific current densities.
