The French government has made a €500m offer for the supercomputing and quantum computing business of Atos.

The debt-laden business is undergoing a strategic restructuring and the French government tis offering €500m for the supercomputing unit with another €125m if targets are met.

Exclusivity for the non-binding offer has been granted until May 31, 2025, depending on customary commercial, employee and administrative authorizations. The Atos restructuring is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 or early in 2025, and an initial payment of €150m million is to be made available upon signing of the Share Purchase Agreement.

The Advanced Computing business regroups the High-Performance Computing (HPC) & Quantum as well as the Business Computing & Artificial intelligence divisions. The business currently employs approximatively 2,500 employees and generated revenue of circa €570m in 2023. Based on the technology from Groupe Bull, acquired a decade ago, the business supplies many of the supercomputer systems around Europe, including JUWELS in Germany.

There is also a commitment to sell off the Mission-Critical Systems and Cybersecurity Products businesses which generated revenue of €340m in 2023 and includes the Eviden business.

The importance of Atos is shown by the latest €165m contract extension with EUROCONTROL for European Airspace Management & Aviation. EUROCONTROL is a pan-European, civil-military organization dedicated to supporting a more efficient, more cost-effective European aviation.

The deal will future proof EUROCONTROL by integrating new and emerging cloud computing technologies and includes the deployment of the first multi-region public cloud solution for Air Traffic Management (ATM) applications, fully accredited by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
