Fraunhofer, VDE establish battery competence centre
The center’s portfolio of activities includes applied market-oriented research and development (R&D) of battery cells and systems, the development of new testing standards, safety and performance tests and certification of components and complete battery systems as well as energy storage plants. The focus is on stationary storage systems, electric mobility and portable applications.
With the establishment of the competence center, the Parthers are responding to the rapidly growing demand for safe and commercially usable batteries and energy storage systems as key technologies for electromobility and the continued increase in the use of renewable energies.
Fraunhofer ISE has many years of experience in research, development and testing of battery storage systems, ranging from cells and modules to systems and their integration into complete systems. Safety tests, which also include destruction and crash tests of complete vehicle batteries, are particularly important in electromobility. With their know-how in the areas of standardisation and certification, the VDE experts offer certification of performance, service life, reliability and data security for battery and storage systems in addition to established safety standards.
The center’s development tests and certifications enable companies to shorten their product development cycles and thus secure their competitiveness in a dynamic global market. The centre is located in Freiburg. More than 30 million euros are to be invested in the competence centre over the next three years. Operation is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2019.
