Functional safety for the the digital cockpit
The QNX Platform for Digital Cockpits enables automotive manufacturers to offer a reliable and secure QNX-based digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. This enables access to Android apps such as Google Maps and Google Play Music via a single controller. BlackBerry’s ISO 26262 security-certified hypervisor ensures that the various operating system environments in which the cluster, infotainment system and other driver information systems operate do not interfere with each other. This isolation is important because if an app crashes, is compromised or needs updating, it has no impact on safety-critical driving functions.
The BlackBerry QNX cockpit platform illustrates the company’s new launch strategy. The goal is to offer vertical solutions that bundle different products. For example, the QNX Platform for Digital Cockpits combines the safety-certified QNX Hypervisor for Safety, the QNX Platform for Instrument Clusters and the QNX CAR Platform for Infotainment, as well as a secure Android implementation. Providing this cockpit solution will shorten development time for automakers and reduce safety risks and costs.
The QNX Platform for Digital Cockpits is made possible through a partnership with Tata Elxsi. Tata Elxsi provides the customization and support for Android and ensures that Android updates and customizations are available throughout the life of the vehicle. The development builds on the existing partnership between the two companies, which was announced in 2017.
