GaN-on-Si LED collaboration eliminates point source glare
At its LuxLive booth, Plessey will be showcasing Zeta’s ZD LED Bulkhead, a solid-state lighting product based on Plessey pioneering GaN-on-Si MaGIC LED die, made at the company’s state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facility in Plymouth, UK. The Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead eliminates point source glare and solves any heating issues associated with LED lighting in an IP rated housing. It also offers higher efficiency; leading to longer lamp life and reduced maintenance and energy consumption costs.
The combined innovation is the result of a three-year collaboration between Zeta Specialist Lighting, the Bicester-based developer and manufacturer of award winning LED and solar powered lighting systems and Plessey, following Zeta securing grant approval from the UK Government under the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) in 2013.
Zeta Specialist Lighting designs, develops and manufactures intelligent, robust and reliable engineered products suited to a wide range of applications. From LED solutions that lower energy bills and carbon emissions for customers across the world, including custom luminaires for street lighting, amenity lighting, signage and LED commercial lighting solutions; to the design and manufacture of complete solar lighting solutions.
Zeta’s Managing Director, Phil Shadbolt, said: "As the lead partner in the project, we have invested heavily in plant and machinery, test equipment and staff, and the imminent launch of the Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead with Plessey’s GaN-on-Si MaGIC LEDs is the first of many new lighting innovations. Plessey’s technology has already shown how we can overcome what up to now has been a significant cost barrier in large-scale LED illumination; as a result we are seeing our LEDs being used in exciting new product developments, like the Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead".
