
GaN reference designs run up to 140W for USB-C PD
Transphorm has developed seven reference designs for GaN-based USB-C PD power adapters. The portfolio includes a wide range of open frame design options with various topologies and outputs ranging from 45W to 140W
The power adapter reference designs use SuperGaN Gen IV 650V FETs to help ease the development process for high power adapters. In recent analysis when compared to a 175 mOhm e-mode GaN device, Transphorm’s 240 mOhm SuperGaN FET showed lower on resistance rise with temperatures above 75°C and higher performance at 50 percent and 100 percent power.
There are five open frame USB-C PD reference designs ranging in frequency from 140 to 300 kHz. As an example, Transphorm partnered with Silanna Semiconductor on a 65W active clamp flyback (ACF) RD running at 140 kHz with a peak efficiency of 94.5 percent.
A 45W adapter design offers 24 W/in3 power density in a quasi-resonant flyback (QRF) topology while three 65W adapter designs offer 30 W/in3 power density in ACF or QRF topologies. A 100W adapter RD offers 18 W/in3 power density in a power factor correction (PFC)+QRF topology
There are also two open frame USB-C PD/PPS reference designs ranging in frequency from 110 to 140 kHz developed with an ACF controller from Diodes Inc to achieve greater than 93.5 percent peak efficiency. Another 65W adapter offers 29 W/in3 power density in an ACF topology while a 140W adapter offers 20 W/in3 power density in a PFC+ACF topology
