The three-month average of global chip sales for June was $27.57 billion, up 10.8 percent over the equivalent figure in June 2013. The year-on-year growth jumped up from 8.8 percent for the previous month showing that the overall market growth accelerated after a minor moderation in May.

Sequentially the three-month average sales were up 2.6 percent from $26.86 billion reported for May 2014.

Three-month average sales in the Americas region were up by 12.1 percent on an annual basis up from 10.7 percent the previous month. Sales in Europe were also up by 12.1 percent, an increase on 10.1 percent in the previous month. Asia-Pacific region June sales were up 10.5 percent of which the Chinese portion managed growth 13.7 percent annual growth. While Asia-Pacific growth strengthened it is notable that China’s year-on-year growth declined, as did that in Japan.

On a month-to-month basis, the European market increased by 1.9% in June and performance remained robust across all the main product groups. Some noteworthy improvement was seen in the areas of discrete, logic and optoelectronics, up 4.8, 4.1 and 2.5 percent, respectively from May, ESIA said. Leading end use market segments in June were consumer, wired and wireless communication applications.

Monthly data is given by the ESIA as a three-month average, although the WSTS organization tracks actual monthly data. The ESIA and other regional semiconductor industry bodies opt to use averaged data because it evens out the actual data that typically show troughs at the beginnings of quarters and peaks at the ends of quarters.
