
This represents the largest year-to-year increase for nearly three years. As January 2014 included the Chinese New Year whereas in 2013 it fell in February this suggests an even stronger start to the calendar year and that February should also see a strong year-on-year jump.
The three-month averaged global sales from January 2014 were 1.4 percent lower than the December 2013 total of $26.65 billion, reflecting normal seasonal trends. Regionally sales in the Americas, up by 17.3 percent compared to last January, and in Europe, up by 11.3 percent, showed the strongest growth although the Asia-Pacific region which is responsible for more than half of all chip purchases also grew strongly.

Monthly data is given by the SIA as a three-month average, although the WSTS organization tracks actual monthly data. The SIA and other regional semiconductor industry bodies opt to use averaged data because it smoothes the actual data that typically show troughs at the beginnings of quarters and peaks at the ends of quarters.
