Global semiconductor industry grows at highest growth rate for 14 years

Samsung was a big winner in 2017 with a year-on-year growth of 53.6% and the company also replaced Intel as the market leader. Intel beat out SK Hynix to take second position. SK Hynix and Micron showed the largest overall growth over the year with 81.2% and 79.7% respectively. In the fabless category, Qualcomm remained the leader with nVidia taking second place following revenue growth of 42.3%.

The category showing the highest growth was memory with a revenue increase of 60.8%. When broken down, DRAM increased by 76.7% and NAND grew 46.6%. This increase was mainly driven by higher prices and increased demand. After memory, the rest of the market grew 9.9% in 2017, driven by strong demand and solid unit-sales growth across all areas. Data processing applications showed the strongest growth with a rise of 33.4%.
