Globalfoundries secures option on land for chipmaking expansion

The move comes soon after Globalfoundries signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate with SkyWater Technologies to cooperate on the development of emerging technologies (see Globalfoundries, SkyWater sign deal to strengthen US chip supply).

Globalfoundries said that the land purchase, as and when it happens, will be used to support client and US government technology development needs. Although there was no discussion of a specific plan for expansion, it is notable that the CHIPS for America bill is passing through legislation, which proposes to provide more than $20 billion (see CHIPS for America Act promises $22.8 billion in aid).

Globalfoundries said whether it would exercise the option to purchase the land and start developing it as an expansion of its Fab 8 facility would depend on zoning regulations and client demand. The purchase price for the land was not disclosed.

“Amid growing consensus in our nation’s capital for investment in semiconductor manufacturing, it’s more important than ever that we are ready to fast track our growth plans at Globalfoundries’ most advanced manufacturing facility in the US,” said Ron Sampson, general manager of US fab operations at Globalfoundries. “With this agreement option, we now have additional flexibility to expand our footprint and position Fab 8 for future growth in Saratoga County and New York State, while strengthening US leadership in semiconductor manufacturing.”

Globalfoundries said it has invested over $13 billion at Fab 8 and employs nearly 3,000 people there. The company recently announced it is bringing its most advanced Fab 8 facility in upstate New York into compliance with both the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) standards and the highly restrictive Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs) under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
