GM introduces all-electric Hummer ‘super truck’
An ad introducing the vehicle is scheduled to air during the Super Bowl game on Sunday, February 2. The GMC Hummer EV, says the company, will feature up to 1,000 horsepower, a 0 to 60 mph acceleration of three seconds, and 11,500 foot-pounds of torque.
“It’s a combination of an incredibly capable truck and a supercar,” says Phil Brook, GMC vice president of marketing. “Those sorts of times are in that ballpark. It’s an all-electric super truck.”
The Hummer EV, says the company, lays the foundation for GM’s all-electric future.
“We believe battery-electric trucks will be a true mark of progress toward a world with zero emissions,” says General Motors President Mark Reuss. “Trucks serve an important purpose for millions of Americans across the country.”
“For some,” says Reuss, “they cart toys, pull boats or traverse the backcountry. For many others, they do hard work that requires serious reliability and versatility. GM trucks are outstanding at both work and play, and electric trucks are the future.”
The electric trucks will be built at the company’s Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant, where GM just announced a $2.2 billion investment. While the GMC HUMMER EV is GM’s first entry in the electric pickup space, says the company, it won’t be alone for long.
“We will offer not just one pickup,” says Reuss, “but multiple models with multiple variants, for multiple customers – a vehicle and package for everyone.”
In addition to trucks, says the company, its electric vehicles will represent every category including cars, crossovers, SUVs, and pickups.
“These products will be powered by our talented, dedicated employees and some of the best EV technologies in the world,” says Reuss. “[These include] highly advanced batteries developed at our Battery Lab in Warren, Michigan; a battery-electric chassis that provides optimal range, ride, and handling; and our new digital vehicle platform that provides the bandwidth and connectivity to support the most sophisticated electric propulsion systems and active safety systems.”
The new GMC Hummer EV will be fully revealed in May, says the company. It is expected to go into production in the fall of 2021 at a plant in Detroit, followed by sales starting toward the end of the year.
