The information is updated at least every 10 minutes. The data are acquired from a third-party service provider and to a lesser extent by crowdsourcing, the company said. With the move, Google starts to compete with existing traffic information systems including TMC, TMC Pro and similar services throughout Europe. "Our goal is to continuously generate the best maps available in the market", a company spokesperson said. "For this reason, we are looking to ways to augment Google Maps with additional new information." She added that the service is also available for the Beta release of Google Maps Navigation.
The service is available in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland.
