Google develops smartphone processor for Pixel 6
Google has announced the development of a custom system-on-chip designed to drive Pixel 6 smartphones to be released in the autumn.
Google has been providing smartphones called Pixel since 2016 but has used Qualcomm application processors. Google has experience of designing processors having developed several generations of Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) to accelerate inference and training tasks in datacenters and Video Coding Unit to handle YouTube traffic.
Now it is entering the consumer space with what is reported to be a 5nm octacore ARM-architecture chip with a strong focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning.
As more and more features are powered by AI and ML it’s not simply about adding more computing resources. Instead, the Tensor processor uses machine learning to unlock specific experiences for Pixel users. Further, a new security core called the Titan M2 integrated into the Tensor SoC, enables the most layers of hardware security in any phone.
Google did not reveal the Tensor processor’s specifications.
