
It has hard to see what has been invented here that is not already prior art – as is often the case with modern patents. In this case array camera startup Pelican Imaging has been around since 2008 and closed a $20 million Series C round of funding bringing the total invested in the company to more than $37 million. It’s investors were Nokia and Qualcomm.
US patent application 20140125810 was filed on Nov. 7, 2012 and assigned to Google and published on May 8, 2014.
The main claim seems to be that the each lens in the lens array focuses light on to a section of the image sensor and that those subsections include activated an unactived pixels that do and do not receive light from the lens.
