Comprising a small team operating out of an existing office in Beijing, the center will focus on fostering the country’s local talent. According to Google, the research center is the first of its kind in Asia.

Many of the world’s top experts in AI and machine learning are to be found in China. For example, says Google, in 2015 Chinese authors contributed 43% of all content in the top 100 AI journals.

“Whether a breakthrough occurs in Silicon Valley, Beijing or anywhere else, it has the potential to make everyone’s life better for the entire world,” says Fei-Fei Li, Chief Scientist AI/ML, Google Cloud. “As an AI first company, this is an important part of our collective mission. And we want to work with the best AI talent, wherever that talent is, to achieve it.”

To be focused on basic AI research, the new Center joins other AI research groups Google has in other cities around the world, including New York, Toronto, London, and Zurich. Besides publishing its own work, it will also fund and sponsor AI conferences and workshops. The center has already begun hiring some top experts, says Li, who will be leading and coordinating the research, and will be working to further build the team in the months ahead.

“At Cloud, we see our enterprise partners using AI to transform their businesses in fascinating ways at an astounding pace,” Li says. “As technology starts to shape human life in more profound ways, we will need to work together to ensure that the AI of tomorrow benefits all of us. The Google AI China Center is a small contribution to this goal.”
