Google, Qualcomm climb US patent ranking

Google jumped three places to number 8 in a ranking of the assignees of US utility patents in 2014 compiled by IFI Claims.

IBM remained at the top of the list, where it has been for 22 years, with 7,534 patents granted, up by 10 percent over 2013. Qualcomm increased its count by 23 percent to 2590 patents and rose form ninth to seventh position. Microsoft held its fifth position.

Outside the top ten Huawei Technologies climbed from 53rd to 48th; foundry chip company TSMC rose to 23rd from 35th. Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. fell from 8th to 18th and Japan’s Hitachi fell from #26 to #38, the two biggest position-drops in the Top 50.

Utility patents are the most common means of protecting intellectual property and technology innovation and are distinct from ornamental design and biological plant patents.
